2. The Dreamhouse Scenario
Overview:
- Dreamhouse Realty:
- A fictional company used throughout Trailhead modules.
- Demonstrates how different businesses customize Salesforce to meet their unique needs.
- Key Personas:
- Michelle:
- Lead real estate broker who uses Salesforce to connect with potential buyers via web and mobile apps.
- D’Angelo:
- Salesforce Administrator who builds custom functionalities to support the business processes for Michelle and her team.
- Michelle:
How Dreamhouse Uses Salesforce:
- Standard Objects:
- Accounts, Contacts, Leads for core CRM processes.
- Custom Objects and Fields:
- Example: A custom Property object specific to real estate.
- Custom fields (e.g., a "Prequalified?" checkbox on the Contact object) allow Dreamhouse to capture industry-specific data.
3. Key Salesforce Terminology
- Database:
- Think of it as a giant spreadsheet where all information entered into Salesforce is stored.
- Objects:
- Tables in the database. Can be standard (e.g., Accounts, Contacts) or custom (e.g., Property).
- Records:
- Rows in the database tables; they hold the actual data.
- Fields:
- Columns in the database tables that define the type of data stored (e.g., Address, Price).
- Org (Organization):
- A specific instance of Salesforce; companies might have one or multiple orgs.
4. Hands-on with a Trailhead Playground
What is a Trailhead Playground?
- Purpose:
- A safe, dedicated environment to practice skills learned on Trailhead.
- Key Points:
- It is a special type of Developer Edition (DE) org.
- You can have up to 10 playgrounds.
- Ideal for testing app building, customization, and various Salesforce features.
Steps to Create and Setup a Playground:
- Creating a New Playground:
- Scroll to the bottom of the module page.
- Click the three dots next to Launch and select +Create Playground.
- Launch & Configure:
- Launch your new playground from the Playground Starter app.
- Click Get Your Login Credentials to reset your password if needed.

5. Customizing the Salesforce Platform: No-code vs. Programmatic
No-code (Declarative) Development:
- What It Is:
- Customization and application building using point-and-click tools, forms, and drag-and-drop interfaces.
- Advantages:
- Fast, requires minimal technical knowledge, ideal for business administrators.
- Customizations are automatically integrated into the user interface, reports, dashboards, and mobile app.
- Example Task: Adding a Custom Field (Prequalified?) to the Contact Object:
- Click Setup > Object Manager > Contact.
- In the Contact details, click Fields & Relationships, then click New.
- Choose the Checkbox data type and click Next.
- Set the Field Label to
Prequalified?(the Field Name will auto-populate). - Click Next to accept defaults for field-level security.
- Ensure the field is added to all Contact Page Layouts and then click Save.
- View changes by navigating to the Dreamhouse App > Contacts tab.
Programmatic Development:
- What It Is:
- Writing code (such as Lightning components) to create custom functionalities.
- Use Cases:
- When the point-and-click tools do not meet the unique business requirements.
- Extending platform capabilities beyond what declarative customization can handle.
6. Summary and Key Takeaways
